May I Certify A Copy Of A Client's Foreign Passport?

New Hotline Resized 3My boss has a client in Germany. We need to have a photocopy of his passport notarized. Am I allowed to notarize something for a German client who is personally known to my boss? A.P., Florida

A Florida Notary has the authority to certify copies. If you are presented with the original passport, you can make a copy and certify that the copy is a true copy of the original (FS 117.05[12]).

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

Hello. A Michigan Notary is prohibited from performing a notarial act for a spouse, lineal ancestor, lineal descendent, or sibling including in-laws, steps, or half-relatives (MCL 55.291[8]). A “lineal ancestor” is an individual in the direct line of ascent, including but not limited to a parent or grandparent; a “lineal descendant” is an individual in the direct line of descent, including but not limited to a child or grandchild (MCL 55.265).
