What ID needs to be provided for a USA PATRIOT ACT Form during a loan signing?

For a USA PATRIOT ACT Form in a loan package, is it acceptable to use a driver’s license and a social security card as proof of identity? — O.B., Ohio

Because Notary Signing Agents must already identify borrowers during a loan document signing to execute acknowledgments on a mortgage or deed of trust, NSAs are often requested to complete a USA PATRIOT ACT Customer Identification Program (CIP) Form to certify that the NSA properly identified the borrower at the signing appointment.

If the particular USA PATRIOT ACT CIP Form does not specify the types of IDs permitted, please reach out to the lender or title representative for guidance.

For more information, please see our USA PATRIOT ACT CIP Form FAQ.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
