Arizona Notary Exam Requirement Begins July 1, 2025: What You Need to Know

Effective July 1, 2025, the Arizona Secretary of State is requiring all new and renewing Arizona Notaries to pass a mandatory proctored exam to qualify for their commission. This new requirement aims to strengthen public protections and combat document fraud.

Below, we answer frequently asked questions about the Arizona Notary exam requirement and how to prepare.

Who is required to take the new Arizona Notary Exam?

Any new or renewing Notary submitting a commission application on or after July 1, 2025, must have taken and passed the exam within 90 days before applying.

To help you avoid any potential lapses in your current Notary commission and ensure a smooth renewal process, the exam is available to take now.

How do I register for the new Arizona Notary exam?

The Arizona Notary Public Exam (ANPE) is proctored by Prometric, a state-approved professional test administration vendor. You can take the exam online or at any of Prometric’s testing sites in Arizona.

To register, you will need to:

  • Select ‘Notary Exam Registration’ on the Arizona Secretary of State’s website to create an account and schedule your exam.
  • Choose your preferred testing method (in-person or online).
  • Pay a $46.75 testing fee to Prometric.

What do I need to know about the exam itself?

The Arizona Notary exam is multiple-choice and consists of 45 questions. You have 60 minutes to complete the exam. There are strict proctoring protocols for both in-person and online test takers to ensure a secure testing environment.

While the exam is open book, you may only use the materials provided to you in the exam system. Once you start the exam, the Arizona Notary Public Reference Manual will be available in the system for you to reference.

What grade do I need to pass the exam?

  • To pass, you must achieve a minimum score of 80%.

What happens if I fail the exam?

If you fail:

  • You must wait 30 days before retaking the exam.
  • After 3 failed attempts, you must wait one year before retaking the exam.

What do I need to study to pass the new Arizona Notary exam?

Questions on the exam are drawn from the Arizona Notary Public Reference Manual. The National Notary Association offers a comprehensive Arizona Notary exam prep course to help you get ready for the exam with confidence.

How will I be notified if I pass?

Upon successful completion of the exam, applicants will receive a score report by email that includes your assigned candidate ID number. You will be prompted to enter your candidate ID number on the application.
