I am receiving requests to certify copies of college transcripts from a major university. Can I do this? — E.L., California
No. California Notaries may not certify copies of documents except for copies of powers of attorney. An alternative may be for the signer to write their own statement certifying the truthfulness and accuracy of the copies and then sign the statement. They would then tell you whether to perform an acknowledgment or jurat. The signer may check with the receiving agency to see if it will accept this procedure.
