NNA Offers Condolences To Friend Of The Association

The staff of the National Notary Association offers its heartfelt condolences to our good friend Thomas Smedinghoff and his family after the loss of his daughter Anne, a young diplomat who was one of five Americans killed in Afghanistan on April 6.

Anne Smedinghoff, 25, a U.S. Foreign Service Officer assigned to the embassy in Kabul, was part of a convoy delivering donated textbooks to school children when a bomb was detonated by the Taliban, according to news reports.

“We have had the privilege of working with Tom for many years and regard him as a good friend to the Association and America’s Notaries,” said NNA Chairman Milt Valera. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom and his family during this tragic time.”

Tom, a partner in the Chicago law firm of Edwards Wildman who specializes in the field of electronic transactions law, served on the drafting committees for the Model Notary Act revisions of 2002 and 2010. Tom also was involved in the NNA sponsored International Forum on eNotarization, eSecurity and eApostilles and is an advisor to the NNA’s Legal Professionals Section.

Michael Lewis is Managing Editor at the National Notary Association.
