Can I notarize a handwritten document if requested by a customer?

If a client comes in with a handwritten document, can we notarize it? — M.M., New York

Yes, you can notarize a handwritten document. You may be required to add the correct notarial certificate wording if whoever handwrote the document has not added the certificate wording for you to notarize their signature.

Ask the signer what notarial act they want performed, such as an acknowledgment or jurat. They will need to choose what type of notarization they want. Do not advise them which one to select. Their choice will determine what type of notarial certificate wording you need to complete.
