Can my son notarize my Notary oath of office?

My son is a Notary in Texas. Can he notarize my own Notary Public oath of office? — R. C., Texas

It is not a good idea. Texas law does not explicitly prohibit a Notary Public from notarizing for family members as long as the Notary does not hold any disqualifying interest under Texas law (i.e., having a direct financial or beneficial interest or being named a party to the instrument). That said, in notarizing a document for a relative, the Notary puts him- or herself in a potentially compromising position where their impartiality and objectivity can be questioned. The NNA always recommends that Notaries not notarize for family members even if the law technically allows them to do so.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

Hi, have a quick question? What are the steps to become a Notary in my own state (Ohio)..If I complete the steps and pass the Notary exam; what are some employment opportunities that may come my way and how do I build on my certifications. Respectfully, Mark E. Orecchio
