Can I use a Notary stamp that lacks my commission expiration date?

Photo of woman with long dark hair on phone. She is looking at papers in her hand. Text on image reads NNA Hotline Tip.

I have a Notary stamp that has my name, title of “Notary Public,” county, and state (North Carolina) on it. It does not have my Notary expiration date on it. When I renew my Notary commission in 2027, because it doesn’t have a date on it, can I continue to use the stamp when notarizing?M.P., North Carolina

Yes; in North Carolina, it’s only optional for your Notary seal to include your commission expiration date. When you renew your commission in 2027, you may continue using the same stamp as long as all the required elements, your name, the title “Notary Public,” your county of commission, and the state are present and is capable of making a legible impression. If not, it should be replaced.

Please be aware that other states have different requirements for the information displayed on an official Notary seal or stamp. If you are a Notary in another state looking for information on seal requirements, you can find the information for your state at our online U.S. Notary Reference page.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

The fact that states are lowering their requirements for notaries to comply with notarial code concerns me greatly. It is only through the strict adherence to code that our worth and value as notaries was measured. Now that such strict adherence is no longer required, our value has seemingly diminished, as evidenced by the comments I have read online and have heard from the general public. What next? Will they start handing out notary commissions freely to illegal aliens? It wouldn’t surprise me. SMH

Thank you for being there, but I rather not renew my commission. I've always had a knock for being honest. However, some bad dudes have been trying to give me problems, because of it. You see, especially, when I worked at Cleveland State University, (long ago) it had been tried to make me overlook that certain claims had already been paid - and when new payments were approved, I was supposed to overlook that. I am not good in "overlooking." The Cleveland Mob did not appreciate that and they tried to harm me. An FBI agent saved my life! Still, I have had to deal with some garbage - even now! So, I've decided to retire. Take care!
