What do I need to do when I certify a copy of a document?

When doing a copy certification, do I notarize the copy made along with the notarial certificate or just the notarial certificate? I’m pretty sure it’s just the notarial certificate just wanted to make sure.P.E., New Jersey

To perform a copy certification, you must make a photocopy of the document in its entirety and then attach a copy certification notarial certificate form in the format as prescribed under NJSA 52:7-10.12 Subsection e. If the original document included a notarial certificate that was notarized previously, you must photocopy it along with the other pages and then attach your completed copy certification certificate to it.

Not all states authorize Notaries to certify copies of documents. To find information about your state’s copy certification rules, please see our article on how to certify a copy of a document.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
