Notary Humor: New Web Comedy Series ‘Notary Publix’ Gets Laughs

Notaries have been getting a lot of TV coverage lately! First “The Big Bang Theory’s” Sheldon Cooper notarized his friends’ signatures in episodes of the hit CBS show. Now the Independent Film Channel has rolled out a new comedy series called “Notary Publix,” about the trials and tribulations of a pair of eccentric Notary siblings.

The show’s protagonists, the Fra Diavolo sisters — Gina and Teresa — constantly try to out-perform their bitter rival, Erin Oatmeal, a local courthouse employee who creates diabolical soap-opera schemes to get the sisters’ commissions revoked.

And while Erin might be the most famous Notary in their community, the Fra Diavolo sisters tout themselves as the best-of-the-best. And they are on a mission to one day grace the cover of La Notarie magazine!

The National Notary Association has lost its credibility with me. The second video went beyond humor to disgusting and inappropriate. A professional and responsible company should not be a purveyor of trash.

How can NNA promote such a crude and insulting show demeaning the professional Notaries Public the NNA claims to support? We are COMMISSIONED BY SECRETARY OF STATE to perform DUTIES for the public which this show reduces to garbage. I will have to think hard whether or not to renew my membership in an association which does not hold itself to a high standard and instead thinks its members should laugh at something like this. Humor is one thing, this show is the other.

I didn't even make it to the end of the first video, much less start the second -- stupid, sophomoric and embarrassing. So much for the campaign to raise respect for Notaries Public.

While I didn't think the clips were particularly funny, I though it was nice that notaries were the subject of any kind of humor video at all. I don't think it demeans notaries at all - this is pure satire. Yes, our job is serious, yes, we have many responsibilities. But you have to learn to poke fun at your own self, and at your own job. There is danger in taking yourself too seriously. Lighten up!

Like with most comedy, it's meant to exaggerate and heighten, not portray a reality. Have a sense of humor, people!
