How does a Notary Public get certified to do fingerprint services in Texas?J.W., Texas

Becoming certified to offer fingerprint services in Texas is outside our expertise on Notary law and practice. It's important to note that taking fingerprints doesn't require a Notary commission. Instead, it may be governed by other Texas laws or regulations. You may be required to take a course, pass an exam, apply and pay a fee, and purchase required equipment.

We advise Notaries in Texas or other states to contact their state or local county office that regulates businesses offering fingerprint services to obtain guidance on the proper instructions and requirements for offering fingerprinting services if interested.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

How can a notary be certified in New York State to do fingerprints verifications?

National Notary Association

28 May 2025

Hello. Fingerprinting services are not part of a New York Notary's official duties. Any qualifications to offer fingerprinting services would need to be obtained separately. We would suggest starting by contacting the state Division of Licensing Services (https://dos.ny.gov/licensing-services) to see if they can provide you with additional information.

Hello. Fingerprinting services are not part of a Florida Notary's official duties, so any certification to perform fingerprinting services would need to be obtained separately from an appropriate agency. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement offers information on becoming a registered LiveScan provider here: https://www.fdle.state.fl.us/Criminal-History-Records/Become-a-livescan-provider Information on registering to perform remote online Notary services in Florida can be found here: https://www.nationalnotary.org/knowledge-center/remote-online-notary/how-to-become-a-remote-online-notary/florida Regarding performing non-legal immigration form services in Florida: We are not aware of any restrictions in your state. Florida does not have laws or rules that specifically authorize, or specifically prohibit, non-legal immigration services such as immigration forms help. Please see here for a list of states that have rules and restrictions: https://www.nationalnotary.org/immigration/knowledge-center/state-immigration-consulting-rules For more FAQs, please visit: https://www.nationalnotary.org/immigration/knowledge-center/immigration-forms-specialist-faq Please be aware that Florida does have rules regarding the advertisement of Notary services in other languages. See below: Foreign Language Ads: “A notary public who is not an attorney who advertises the services of a notary public in a language other than English, whether by radio, television, signs, pamphlets, newspapers, or other written communication, with the exception of a single desk plaque, shall post or otherwise include with the advertisement a notice in English and in the language used for the advertisement. The notice shall be of a conspicuous size, if in writing, and shall state: ‘I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA, AND I MAY NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICE OR ACCEPT FEES FOR LEGAL ADVICE.’ If the advertisement is by radio or television, the statement may be modified but must include substantially the same message” (FS 117.05[10]). Translation of “Notary Public”: “Literal translation of the phrase “Notary Public” into a language other than English is prohibited in an advertisement for notarial services” (FS 117.05[11]).
