Can I notarize only one of multiple signatures on a document?

If there is a document with two signature spots, and one is already filled out and the person is not there, can I notarize the signature of the person who is present?T. D., PA

Yes, you can Notarize the signature of the person appearing before you. When you fill out the Notary verbiage, you must only enter the name of the persons appearing before you.  Also, you may want to make a note in your journal under “additional information” of the name of the other signer on the document and indicate that he was not present at the time of the notarization.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
