Do I need a new seal when I renew my commission?

Photo of woman with long dark hair on phone. She is looking at papers in her hand. Text on image reads NNA Hotline Tip.

My current stamp has a blank spot for the commission, so I do not have to get a new stamp every time my commission needs to be renewed. Can I do that?P.S., Maryland

You must obtain a new official stamp for each commission. According to ACM St. Gov’t 18-218(a](2), on resignation from, or the revocation or expiration of, the Notary’s commission, or on the expiration of the date set forth in the Notary’s stamping device, if it contains one, the Notary must disable the stamping device by destroying, defacing, damaging, erasing, or securing it against use in a manner that renders it unusable.

For more information, please see our pages “How to Renew as a Notary” and “Everything You Need to Know About Your Notary Seal Stamp or Seal Embosser”.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

I have had my notary commission since 2020. However, I have not done any signings or anything, I haven't even purchased my initial supplies. Do I need to do regular notary signings for a while, before looking into becoming a loan signing agent? I am in the state of Virginia. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

The answer seems contradictory. You state that P.S. needs a new stamp, and then quote the act which says:... on the expiration of the date set forth in the Notary’s stamping device, if it contains one, P.S.'s stamp does not contain an expiration date so why the need for a new stamp?

CT Notary stamp doesn't have an expiration date. You can hand write your commission expiration date if required or buy a stamp that has the information.

I was just commenting, you guys have helped me get started and all my renewals. south dakota has the name around the top, the word seal in the middle with "notary" above the seal and "public" below the seal and "south dakota" around the bottom, no date. when we renew we have to put our seal on the renewal application, if you want a different or additional (stipulate wheter add or new) seal you have to send a new application.
