How is a Notary Signing Agent paid?

I’m curious how a Notary Signing Agent gets paid. Do I send an invoice? Do I wait until the assignment is completed? What should be my next step after mailing back the loan package?J.R., Texas

Notary Signing Agents are paid after the assignment has been completed. The payment terms usually are stated in the agreement you signed with the contracting company. Each company you work for will have their own rules. You should follow any procedures and duties for receiving payment that are outlined in the contract.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

Are payments made to notaries via direct deposit into their bank accounts?

I performed a notary assignment that was halted in the middle and the client did not want to continue signing. He didn’t agree with wording on a page, we called the law firm and they said they’d need to potentially rework the doc. Do I just not get paid for my time or supplies when jobs are halted in the middle? For scheduling reasons I may not be the notary that is called back out to sign with this person so I can’t guarantee I recover my fee that way. How is payment supposed to work if the job isn’t completed?

Hello. One option taken by some Notaries is to discuss and agree upon payment terms if the notarization can't be completed with the customer or client prior to the assignment.
