Notary Entrepreneur Attributes Success To Training And Technology

Entrepreneurial Notaries have found countless ways to leverage their commissions into successful business opportunities, and Notary Sue Presutti of “Sue’s Notary Services” is no exception—her business just celebrated its 30th anniversary. The Notary Signing Agent and Small Business Section spoke to Sue about how training and technology have helped contribute to the growth and success of her company.

How have you been able to build your company?
At first I just used word of mouth and referrals, then I started running newspaper ads, and eventually I moved into TV and radio ads. Once we were awarded the contract to perform vehicle transactions in 1995 — we were the second site in Pennsylvania to offer them — we got so busy we ran out of room. I left my original location in a strip mall to move into a house we converted into our current office. Now that we’ve grown, I don’t need to advertise as much.

What advice do you have for other small business owners or entrepreneurial Notaries?
It’s a lot of hard work. The bigger you get, the more challenges that arise. Keeping up with technology has really helped the business grow, and I like that I don’t have to answer to someone else. I can also be more flexible now, and can even take a vacation. I know I have good, well-trained employees who can handle the place in my absence. It takes great employees to keep a business going.
