Hotline Tip: Can I Notarize A Document In Which I'm Mentioned?

NNA Hotline Tips For NotariesI’ve been asked to notarize a document that includes myself on a list of people being authorized as representatives of the signer. Can I perform this notarization, or should I get a Notary who is not mentioned in the document to perform it? — W.H. of Christiansburg, Virginia

You should not perform this notarization, because you have a direct interest in the document. Notaries in Virginia — and many states — cannot notarize any documents in which they are a party or have a direct interest.(COV 47.1-30)
