Hotline Tip: Can I Notarize A Document In Which I'm Mentioned?

I’ve been asked to notarize a document that includes my name on a list of people being authorized as representatives of the signer. Can I perform this notarization, or should I get a Notary who is not mentioned in the document to perform it? — W.H., Christiansburg, VA

You should not perform this notarization because you have a direct interest in the document. Notaries in Virginia — and many states — cannot notarize any documents in which they are a party or have a direct interest. (COV 47.1-30) You will want to find an impartial Notary to complete this notarization.
