States where Notaries may charge a reasonable fee but must disclose it in advance
Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky and Maine don't set maximum Notary fees, but Notaries in these states must tell signers what they'll charge before performing the notarial act.
States that require a posted or displayed fee schedule
Notaries who charge fees in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Utah must post, display, or otherwise provide their fee schedule in writing. Some states require the fees to be posted at the Notary's place of business while others allow presenting a fee schedule to the signer on request or before the notarization.
Notary travel fees
Notaries may be able to charge a fee for commuting to signers, but it depends on their state.
- States that set travel fees: District of Columbia, Idaho, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Virginia
- States that use mileage-based rates: Arizona, Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Utah and Wyoming
- States with travel fee guidelines: Arkansas, California, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington
- States that allow Notaries to set their own travel fees: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin
