Summary
House Bill 178 adds employees of the Department of Corrections who can obtain a Notary Public commission to perform notarial acts within the scope of their official duties.

  1. Adds persons employed by the Vermont Department of Corrections to the list of persons who can be commissioned as Notaries Public to perform notarial acts within the scope of their official duties and are exempted from all regular requirements for Notaries.

Analysis

In Vermont, certain judiciary and law enforcement officials and staff may be granted a Notary Public commission to perform notarial acts within the scope of their duties in their respective offices. House Bill 178 adds Department of Corrections employees to the list of such officials in statute. These Notaries may only perform notarial acts when performing official duties and they are exempted from the requirements in Title 26, Chapter 103 of the Vermont Statutes Annotated relating to Notaries.
