June 26, 2012
Effective:
June 26, 2012
Chapter: 449
Affects:Amends Section 42-30-5 of the Rhode Island General Laws
Changes: - Permits resident and non-resident certified public accountants to become commissioned as a Rhode Island Notaries Public upon application and presentation of a certificate of public accountancy.
Analysis:Rhode Island is the first state to allow certified public accountants to become commissioned as Notaries. A CPA may be a state resident or reside in another state. He or she must apply for a commission, pay the commissioning fee, and present his or her certificate of accountancy with the application. In Rhode Island, all applicants for a Notary commission except attorneys and certified public accountants must be state residents.
