MI Senate Bill 1187

Notary Law Update: MI Senate Bill 1187

State: Michigan

Summary:
Senate Bill 1187 extends Notary commissions that have expired during the COVID-19 pandemic further and also extends Michigan's remote ink-signed notarization authorization.

Signed:  December 30, 2020

Effective:  December 30, 2020

Chapter: Public Act 336

Affects:
Amends MCL 55.269 and MCL 55.286c and 55.286d as added by Public Act 249 of 2020.

Changes:
  1. Extends the commissions of Notaries Public that expired after March 1, 2020, and before June 30, 2021, to June 30, 2021.
  2. Extends the authorization for Notaries to perform "remote ink-signed notarizations" until July 1, 2021.
Analysis:
Senate Bill 1187 is a COVID-19 measure that extends Notary commissions that have expired during the pandemic and extends the authorization to perform remote ink-signed notarizations (RIN). Senate Bill 1187 was necessary because a previous bill, House Bill 6297, had extended these authorizations through December 31, 2020. Thus, SB 1187 extends Notary commissions that have from March 1, 2020, and will expire through June 30, 2021, to June 30, 2021. RINs are also authorized through that time.
