A National Campaign to Educate the Public
The National Notary Association has developed the "What Is a Notary Public?" brochure, part of a national campaign to educate the public about Notaries. It is available free and printed in both English and Spanish.
Designed to educate the public and the business community about how Notaries function as a deterrent to fraud, the brochure has been one of the Association's most widely used publications since it was introduced more than a decade ago. It is estimated that "What Is a Notary Public?" has reached more than one million people through the NNA's various distribution avenues.
The brochure is free (with a nominal mailing charge) to Notaries and others interested in participating in this campaign to educate the public.
A Spanish-language version of the information below is included on the reverse side so you can provide a printed copy for Spanish-speaking individuals.
The brochure covers the following information:
- What is a Notary Public?
- Why are documents notarized?
- May any document be notarized?
- Is notarization required by law?
- How does a Notary identify a signer?
- How much does a notarization cost?
- Does notarization mean that a document is "true" or "legal"?
- May a Notary give legal advice or draft legal documents?
- May a Notary notarize or prepare immigration papers?
- May a Notary refuse to serve people?
- How does a U.S. Notary differ from a Notario Publico?
- Where do I report illegal or improper acts by a Notary?
