What to know when applying to become a District of Columbia Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; a DC resident or have a primary place of employment or practice in DC; not be disqualified from receiving a commission under Section 23; and meet any additional qualifications established by rules issued by the Mayor.
  • Complete the required orientation. All applicants must attend a mandatory orientation within three weeks of submitting the application. The session covers DC notarial laws and regulations outlined in the Notary Public Handbook.
  • Submit your application. Apply through the Office of the Secretary’s website, including your letter of request and two character references, and pay the $75 application fee.
  • Use required tools. Washington, DC Notaries must use a Notary seal embosser and maintain a Notary journal for every notarization performed
  • Allow time for processing. The Mayor, through the Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications (not the NNA), is the commissioning authority. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks.
