What to know when applying to become a Vermont Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; a Vermont resident or employed in Vermont; and not disqualified by law.
  • Complete your oath of office. Fill out the oath form and have it notarized by a Vermont Notary.
  • Submit your application. Create an account on the Office of Professional Regulation website, complete the application, upload your notarized oath of office, and pay the $30 fee.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Vermont Secretary of State (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
  • Allow time for processing. The North Dakota Secretary of State (not the NNA) is the commissioning authority. The full process typically takes four to six weeks, depending on application processing time and applicant availability.
