What to know when applying to become a Utah Notary Public

What to know when applying to become a Utah Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a Utah resident or employed in the state for at least 30 days; able to read, write, and understand English; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; and free of any disqualifying offenses or license revocations.
  • Meet state requirements. Utah requires a $5,000 Notary surety bond and an official Notary seal.
  • Complete a background check. All applicants must submit a signed waiver to the Lieutenant Governor’s office. Your information is forwarded to the Department of Human Resource Management, which conducts the screening and reports the results back to the Lieutenant Governor.
  • Prepare for and pass the exam. Create an account on Utah.gov to complete your application and take the required exam. A passing score is 61 or higher. After completing the exam, you’ll pay the exam and application fees and your application will be submitted.
  • Allow time for processing. The application process typically takes about two weeks.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Office of the Utah Lieutenant Governor (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
