Notary Signing Agent certification FAQs

Which package do I need to become certified?

You can choose either package to get your Notary Signing Agent certification.

  • NNA Certification Standard: This is ideal for Notary Signing Agents who feel confident getting started on their own.
  • NNA Certification Complete: This is ideal for first-time Notary Signing Agents who want full support. It includes everything in the Standard package plus Notary Signing Agent supplies and NNA Membership, so you can hit the ground running.

How long does the Notary Signing Agent certification process take?

If you’re already a commissioned Notary, it can take up to two weeks to become NNA Certified.

Applicants who are not yet commissioned will need to meet their state’s eligibility requirements and apply to become a Notary.

Is a certificate of completion provided at the end of the course?

No. Your SigningAgent.com listing confirms your completion of the NNA Certification program and provides a way for hiring companies to verify your credentials.

What happens after I purchase a package?

Once you’ve purchased your Notary Signing Agent package, our Training Center will email you access to your online training course and certification exam. You’ll also receive an email from Backgrounds Online to complete your background check.

What is the SPW?

Signing Professionals Workgroup (SPW) is an organization that provides recommended standards for Notary Signing Agents to ensure they’re up to date on industry practices and legal requirements.

How does the background screening work?

Our background screening vendor, Backgrounds Online, will email you instructions within 24 hours of purchasing your package.

They will process your background screening, which typically takes five to 10 business days. However, it can take as long as 10-15 days if you live in specific states. Results will be emailed to you.

Are there state restrictions for Notary Signing Agents?

Most states have no restrictions placed on Signing Agents performing loan signing services in real estate closings.

The 19 states that do have additional requirements for or limitations on performing loan signings include: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, North New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.
