What to know when applying to become a Montana Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; able to read and write English; a Montana resident, employed or licensed to do business or practice in the state, or the spouse or legal dependent of active-duty military personnel stationed in Montana; and free from any disqualifying offenses listed in 1-5-621 MCA.
  • Complete required training. You must take a Secretary of State-approved Notary training course. Our course meets this requirement.
  • Pass the Montana Notary Exam. All applicants must take the Montana Notary Exam.
  • Meet state requirements. Montana requires a $25,000 Notary surety bond, an official Notary seal, and a Notary journal.
  • Submit your application. Complete the Montana Notary Public application through the Secretary of State's Online Notary Portal.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Montana Secretary of State (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
