What to know when applying to become a Massachusetts Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old and a legal resident of Massachusetts or regularly conduct business in the state.
  • Review state law. Applicants must read Chapter 222 of the General Laws, as amended by Chapter 289 of the Acts of 2016 , and sign the application under penalty of perjury confirming they have read and will comply with its terms.
  • Use required tools. Massachusetts Notaries must use an official Notary seal and maintain a Notary journal.
  • Complete your application. Attach a current resume and a business card (if available). Print your application and complete the following:
    • Notary Public: Get your application notarized by a Notary Public.
    • References: Obtain signatures on your notarized application from four Massachusetts residents, including one MA attorney in good standing.
  • Allow time for processing. The Governor of MA (not the NNA) is the commissioning authority. Processing may take up to 18 days.
