What to know when applying to become a Wisconsin Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. resident; have at least an 8th-grade education; be familiar with the duties and responsibilities of a Notary Public; and not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor involving a violation of the public trust unless the conviction has been expunged or pardoned.
  • Meet state requirements. Wisconsin requires a $500 Notary surety bond and an official Notary seal.
  • Maintain a journal (recommended). While not required, the state recommends keeping a record of notarial acts in a journal.
  • Complete the state-provided tutorial and exam. Wisconsin requires applicants to complete a tutorial and pass a 30-question exam with a score of 90% or higher.
  • Complete the application process. After passing the exam, submit your Four Year Notary Commission application with your exam certificate, bond form, and oath of office to the Department of Financial Institutions.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
