What to know when applying to become a South Dakota Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be a permanent resident of South Dakota, or a resident of a bordering state who works in South Dakota and have no felony convictions.
  • Use a compliant Notary seal stamp. South Dakota Notaries must have a Notary seal that meets state requirements.
  • Maintain a journal (recommended). While not required for most notarizations, the Secretary of State strongly recommends keeping a register or record of all notarial acts.
  • Submit your application. Complete the Notary Public Application, include an imprint of your Notary seal, and submit it to the Secretary of State with the $30 commission fee.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The South Dakota Secretary of State (not the NNA) is the
commissioning authority. Allow a minimum of seven business days for processing.
