What to know when applying to become a South Carolina Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a South Carolina resident and registered voter; able to read and write English; not under a court order declaring mental incompetence; not currently serving a sentence for a criminal conviction; and not previously convicted of a felony or election law offense unless you have completed your sentence or received a pardon.
  • Use an official seal. South Carolina Notaries must have an official seal of office, which may be an ink stamp or embosser.
  • Maintain a journal if required. A Notary journal is required if you perform in-person electronic notarizations.
  • Complete and notarize your application. Submit your application and have it notarized by a South Carolina Notary.
  • Allow time for processing. The South Carolina Secretary of State (not the NNA) is the commissioning authority. Processing may take up to 12 weeks.
