Can I add my commission expiration to my Notary Seal?

Can I include my commission expiration date with my notary seal? — Y.W., Tennessee

No. A Notary commissioned on or after July 1, 2004, may only include in the Notary’s official seal the Notary’s name exactly as it appears on their commission, the words “State of Tennessee Notary Public” or “Tennessee Notary Public”, and the name of Notary’s county of election. Tennessee Notaries are required to include their commission expiration date on every acknowledgment certificate; however, it is not allowed as part of your notary seal.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
