What to know when applying to become a Nebraska Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 19 years old; able to read and write English; a Nebraska resident or a resident of a bordering state who can provide proof of employment in Nebraska; and not have been convicted of a felony involving fraud or dishonesty within the five years prior to application.
  • Pass the required exam. Nebraska does not require a training course, but applicants must take and pass the Notary Public Examination covering the duties and obligations of a Notary.
  • Submit your application. Create an account or log in to the Secretary of State’s Online Notary Portal to complete the application.
  • Meet supply and bond requirements. Nebraska Notaries must use a Notary seal for all notarizations and obtain a $15,000 Notary bond. While not required by law, the state recommends maintaining a journal of all notarial acts.
  • Allow time for processing. The Nebraska Secretary of State (not the NNA) is the commissioning authority. Processing typically takes approximately 10–14 days.
