What to know when applying to become a Maine Notary Public

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a Maine resident or have a place of employment or practice in the state; demonstrate proficiency in English; not have had a Notary commission revoked or suspended for official misconduct in Maine or any other jurisdiction within the past five years; and not have been convicted within the past 10 years of a crime punishable by imprisonment for one year or more, or a lesser offense incompatible with the duties of a Notary.
  • Maintain a journal when required. Maine Notaries must keep a journal when performing electronic or remote notarizations.
  • Complete and notarize your application. Print and complete the Application for a Notary Public Commission and submit it with the $50 fee payable to the Treasurer, State of Maine.
  • Pass the required exam. Applicants must complete the open-book exam included with the application.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Maine Secretary of State (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
