What to know when applying to become a Iowa Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; live or work in Iowa; be able to read and write English; and not have been convicted of a felony involving fraud, dishonesty, or deceit, or had a finding or admission of liability in any legal or disciplinary action based on fraud, dishonesty, or deceit.
  • Use a compliant Notary seal stamp. Iowa Notaries must use a seal stamp for all notarizations.
  • Submit your application. Submit the Application for Appointment as Notary Public. By completing the form, you are making your oath of office.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The Iowa Secretary of State (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
