What to know before you become a Notary Public in Virginia

  • Meet Virginia Notary requirements. You must be at least 18 years old, a legal U.S. resident, able to read and write English, and live or work in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Applications are submitted to the state. To apply, complete your Virginia Notary application, pay the $45 application fee, and have your signature (on Part 3 of the application) notarized before sending it to the state.
  • It takes about three weeks to process your application. Once approved, you’ll be commissioned by the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth.
