What to know before you become a Notary Public in Illinois

  • Make sure you’re eligible. You must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, live or work in Illinois for at least 30 days before applying, be able to read and write in English, have no felony convictions, and have no previous Notary commissions revoked.
  • Commissions take a few weeks to be issued. Once you’ve submitted your application to the state, it can take five to eight weeks for your commission to be issued.
