What to know when applying to become a North Dakota Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old; a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident; able to read and write English; a North Dakota resident or have a place of employment or practice in the state; and not have been convicted of a felony involving fraud or dishonesty within the five years prior to application.
  • No training or exam required. North Dakota does not require a Notary training course or examination.
  • Submit your application. Complete the application online and submit it to the Secretary of State with your notarized bond form and the $36 fee.
  • Meet equipment and bond requirements. North Dakota Notaries must use a Notary seal for all notarizations and obtain a $7,500 Notary bond.
  • Allow time for processing. The North Dakota Secretary of State (not the NNA) is the commissioning authority. The full process typically takes four to six weeks, depending on application processing time and applicant availability.
