What to know when applying to become a Minnesota Notary Public

  • Meet Minnesota Notary requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and either a Minnesota resident or a resident of a county in Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wisconsin. You’ll need to specify the county where you'll be filing when you receive your Notary commission.
  • Processing takes up to four weeks. Most Minnesota Notary Public commission applications are processed within two to four weeks, depending on how long the Secretary of State needs to review your application and mail your certificate.
  • Minnesota commissions last five years. You are appointed and commissioned by the Minnesota Secretary of State, not by the National Notary Association.
