What to know when applying to become a New Hampshire Notary Pubic

  • Confirm your eligibility. You must be at least 18 years old and either a New Hampshire resident or a resident of an abutting state who is a Notary in that state and carries on a trade, business, or practice in New Hampshire. Your application must be endorsed by two New Hampshire Notaries in good standing and one New Hampshire registered voter.
  • Use an official Notary seal. New Hampshire Notaries must use an official seal for all notarial acts. For paper documents, this may be an inked rubber stamp or embosser.
  • Maintain a journal when required. A Notary journal is required if you perform notarizations for remotely located individuals and is strongly recommended for in-person notarizations.
  • Complete and sign your application. Include the Acknowledgment of Criminal Record Check form. Sign the application in the presence of a Notary Public or justice of the peace, then obtain endorsements from two New Hampshire Notaries and one New Hampshire registered voter.
  • Know the commissioning authority. The New Hampshire Secretary of State (not the NNA) issues Notary commissions.
