What to know when applying to become an Arizona Notary Pubic

  • Make sure you’re eligible. You must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, legally reside in Arizona, able to read and write English, and cannot be a convicted felon (unless your civil rights are restored).
  • You'll need to pass an exam. All Notary Public applicants must take a mandatory Notary exam through the state. If you fail the exam, you must wait 30 days to retake it. We have a "Prepare for and Pass the Arizona Notary Exam"  online course that can help you feel exam-ready.
  • Study while you wait. The Secretary of State can take 4 to 6 weeks to process your completed application. Use this time to get familiar with the Arizona Notary Public Reference Manual.
  • Arizona has a 4-year commission term. You're appointed and commissioned by the Arizona Secretary of State, not by the National Notary Association.
