The NNA Trusted Enrollment Agent Program

Notaries Well Positioned to Serve as Identity Managers

Several intriguing opportunities await the entrepreneurial Notary as emerging circumstances require mobile in-person identity verification. We can see a day when mobile identity proofing will be as important as fingerprinting is today, and as a Notary you’re well-positioned to serve in this role.

Security-conscious organizations throughout the United States increasingly are requiring their employees to undergo in-person ID vetting. At this time, NNA-certified and background-screened Trusted Enrollment Agents are among the very few who are trained and qualified to provide in-person mobile identity verification. As a result, organizations that require ID proofing are beginning to turn to the NNA’s Trusted Enrollment Agents program to meet their needs. The NNA engages with such organizations, and TEAs who are approved to provide ID-proofing services to these clients receive assignments through the NNA.

When you become a Trusted Enrollment Agent, you become eligible for jobs from our existing clients, as well as being first in line when new opportunities emerge. It is important to understand that this is an emerging opportunity and that current needs for mobile in-person ID proofing services are limited to specific areas. As such, not all TEAs are currently receiving assignments. But if you’re a Notary who enjoys being an early adopter of new technologies and programs, then the TEA program may be right for you.

Becoming a Trusted Enrollment Agent

To become an NNA-certified TEA, you must fulfill the requirements listed below. Ideally, they should be carried out in the order in which they are listed.

  1. Complete the NNA’s online TEA application form, which requests information about your Notary commission, NNA member status, location and availability.
  2. Complete and agree to the provisions of the online independent contractor’s agreement. To enroll in the program, you must accept the terms of this agreement.
  3. Undergo NNA background screening. You will receive instructions on how to complete this step.
  4. Complete the NNA’s online Trusted Notary Training and pass the exam. This course provides you with required training in notarial law, professional best practices and ethical standards. (NOTE: Notary Signing Agents with current NNA certification have already met this requirement.)
  5. Complete the NNA’s online TEA Specialization Training and pass the exam. This course gives you the necessary TEA-specific skills and knowledge.

Once you have completed the above requirements, you are certified as a TEA. To become eligible to receive mobile ID-proofing assignments, you must complete at least one free client-specific online tutorial and pass the related exam. Each NNA client has its own requirements for ID proofing, and the tutorial describes the role, functions, responsibilities and duties of a TEA for that particular client.

As soon as you complete any client tutorial and pass the tutorial exam, you will be listed in the NNA’s Trusted Enrollment Agent database. Once you are listed in the database, you will be eligible to receive ID-proofing assignments for any client whose tutorial you have successfully completed.
