Eligibility
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a legal resident of California
  • Not have been convicted of a felony
  • Not have been convicted of a disqualifying misdemeanor (see list of disqualifying offenses on the California Secretary of State Web site) where not more than 10 years have passed since the completion of probation
 

Application and Bond Filing Procedures
Call the NNA at 1-800-US NOTARY (1-800-876-6827) if you have any questions during this process.
  • Order yourComplete Notary Supply Package (see "Become" and "Renew" links above) — which includes your State-required Notary Bond.*
  • Pass the State-required Notary Exam.
  • Submit your Notary Public Application to the State, enclosing your State application fees.
  • Receive your State-issued Commission Certificate (within 4 to 6 weeks).
  • Forward a COPY of your Commission Certificate to the NNA for processing.
  • We will mail your activated Notary Bond to you via First Class mail.
  • File your Notary Bond and Oath of Office with the County Clerk.

State Filing Fee: $40.00 for NEW and RENEWING commissions
Bond Required: $15,000
Seal Required: Embosser or inked stamp; must be an inked impression and reproducible on a photocopier (inked stamp is customary)

Copy of Journal Entry for Public: $.30 cents per page + $10.00 if certified copy
Protest: $10.00+$5.00 for notice of non-payment + 5 for recording
Additional Information: No fee allowed for election documents; travel fees allowed if signer agrees and if Notary explains that the travel fee is separate from notarial fee.
