The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that it will disburse $79 million in REAL ID Demonstration Grants this year to assist states in improving driver’s license and ID security.
Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act requires states to conform to nationwide security standards for driver’s licenses and other forms of ID. Many states have asked the federal government to assist in easing the high cost of the program — which the new grants may help with.
The REAL ID Act was passed in response to calls by the 9/11 Commission to enhance the security and integrity of identification systems around the country. Standardized, secured IDs benefit Notaries by making it easier to properly identify signers who appear before them and making it harder for dishonest signers to obtain fake identification.
