By enacting Senate Bill 546, the Illinois General Assembly has made significant alterations to the Illinois Notary Public Act — specifically to Section 5 ILCS/6-102 — which sets more specific standards for the identification of document signers in the execution of acknowledgments, verifications upon oath or affirmation and signature witnessings.

This new law:

  • Affects all Illinois Notaries for all notarizations involving the three types of notarial acts cited above

  • Sets new specifications for identification documents in order to qualify as "satisfactory evidence" of identity

  • Applies until July 1, 2013, unless extended by the General Assembly
