About the NNA » The NNA Today

Since 1957, the mission of the National Notary Association has been to professionalize the Notaries of the United States through programs that train, equip, support and speak out for this dedicated group of indispensable public servants.

The NNA today stands as the nationally and internationally recognized professional association for America's 4.5 million Notaries Public, helping these detectors of identity theft and document fraud protect the valuable rights and property of American consumers.

The NNA is dedicated to imparting knowledge, inspiration and community among Notaries, while promoting the highest ethical standards and the best notarial practices.

First and foremost, the Association fosters both professional and personal development among Notaries. It does so by offering an unparalleled range of primary and continuing Notary education programs in diverse media, from classroom instruction to home study courses to online seminars. It also offers specialized training and guidance in new career opportunities now opening up for Notaries, such as the vocation of Notary Signing Agent.

The Association is the nation's premier publisher of instructional and reference materials for and about Notaries. Its diverse range of publications include the nation's leading periodical in the notarial field, The National Notary magazine; a series of state Primers explaining Notary statutes and regulations in layman's terms; pamphlets such as What Is A Notary Public? explaining the Notary office to the general public; and the U.S. Notary Reference Manual, the definitive compendium on Notary statutes, regulations and practices in the 50 states and U.S. territories.

Long regarded as the voice of the American Notary, the NNA is regularly consulted by government administrators, lawmakers, prosecutors and attorneys, as well as by business leaders, journalists and scholars. It is considered the nation's clearinghouse for information on Notary laws, customs and practices, and its expert staff is in constant demand as speakers, consultants and expert witnesses.

In this new era of electronic documents, the Association is looked to as the leader and definitive authority on "eNotarization," with its influential Electronic Notary Seal Program™, National eNotary Registry and Enjoa® electronic journal and notarization platform.

The NNA guides the Notaries of the United States in their daily duties through such resources as its Notary Public Code of Professional Responsibility — widely known as the American Notary's ethical code — and a "Notary Hotline" offering immediate answers to questions arising during the performance of notarial acts.

The Association also serves employers of Notaries through its popular Corporate Notary Assistance Program (CNAP), which guides employees through the Notary-commissioning process and ensures that they are properly trained and equipped.

Over the years, the NNA has been the constant ally of state governments in revising and updating their Notary laws. State legislators have found the Association's Model Notary Act, created in 1973 and updated in 1984 and 2002, to be invaluable in modernizing their Notary laws.

And, in the international arena, foreign Notary organizations and even the respected Hague Conference on Private International Law increasingly look to the NNA as a partner and collaborator on the important electronic apostille program.

Despite the National Notary Association's growing recognition by business and government leaders, both in this nation and abroad, the NNA remains ever true to its primary mission of professionalizing American Notaries while providing every professional tool or service they need to excel in their careers.
